homeowner removed deck and then decided to hire me to replace it. This deck wont be attached to the house, but it will just touch it. To do that i have to have a beam on the house side and on the opposite side. Here you can overhang the joists up to 24″ past the beams, and posts in from the ends up to 24″. I set in the new posts after string lining the perimeter of the deck and running a line for the posts. Dug down 36″ to the frost line and set the posts to the line and filled the hole with concrete. I bolted the beam to the posts with 1/2″×8″ carriage bolts. The ends of the beam have a 45 degree angle cut for a nice touch.
Before setting joists i pulled back the rock that was there and laid new plastic and brought in another ton of rock to prevent any growth under the deck.
Next i layed out for the joists, marking every 16″ from one end on both beams. I also did the same on the rim joists. I attached the rim joist that will go up by the house first before sliding the whole deck up to the house. Then i attached each end to the beam by the house. Then i ran a string line to get the rim joist at the house streight. When streight i screwed the joists in place to the beam. After that I screwed the other end of the joists to the other beam on the 16″ layouts made earlier. Then your ready to attach the rim joist on that end.
At this point its time to lay some deck boards. I ran these at a 45 degree angle because i like to be different than running them all streight.
Theres a bit more scrap running the boards at an angle but i like the look. There will be a 4×6 stoop in the corner by the door and i will run the decking at the opposite 45 degree angle.
All finished. Customers very pleased.
4ft wide steps and a 4x6ft stoop.
